The Ride: Days 10-12

Today was a good bit of climbing. A little over 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Not as much as day 1 or day 2, but not trivial. I am really enjoying traveling through the small towns. The people have been friendly, the service has been good, and the food has been excellent.

The Ride: Days 7-9

We waited for him and when he arrived, he said he talked to the cleanup crew, and it was going to take a day or two to clear the road. They said that the storm that we rode through the day before caused a mud slide up the road in two spots. The first spot wasn’t too bad, and Sergio thought he could walk through it. They wouldn’t let him, and they said the second spot was far worse; it had 7-foot thick of mud blocking the road.

The Ride: Days 4-6

This was a good day of riding. I felt strong, we skipped the I-10 section, and extended the ride. We went to Wickenburg. Well, about 10 miles short of Wickenburg. US 60 from I-10 to Wickenburg was a nice gentle climb. As the day progressed, the head winds picked up, but not too bad.

The Ride: Days 1-3

As many of you are aware, Athalonz Founder and CEO Tim Markison is riding his bicycle across the United Sates, from San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL, to raise funds and awareness to combat child abuse.

Cycle to End Abuse: The Training

Over the last few years, I’ve gotten to know Tim very well. He is gifted, dedicated, and motivated. But he is not a highly experienced cyclist, and he has not trained and raced at the highest levels for years. In fact, he was a recreational cyclist who rode his bike a few miles occasionally. So, how does one go from nearly zero miles to a 3,000+ mile bike ride across America? And the bonus question: How does one safely and properly prepare in only nine months?

Planning the Ride

When I decided to do a cross-country bike ride six months ago to raise awareness of, and money for, child abuse prevention, I had a vague idea of the amount of planning and work that was needed. As such, we’ve emphasized performance in the design of our shoes, but it has to be balanced with comfort and weight. Even if we get the performance, comfort, and weight right, the shoes have to look good or no one, but the most die-hard athlete, will buy them. In our opinion, we’ve nailed the style, so our shoes provide the whole package.

My Story of Hope and Inspiration

I have come to know that I am a smart, lovable, valuable and a worthwhile person. I also know that I can do a lot of things extremely well and I have accomplished a great deal of inspiring accomplishments and worthy successes in my life. Even so, until a few years ago, I had no intentions of sharing my story.

Why the Ride?

Starting September 29, 2021, I’ll be riding my bicycle from San Diego CA to Jacksonville FL. The ride is over 3,000 miles long and will take 40 days to complete (that’s about 75 miles per day, which, at 14 mph, is 5 hours and 20 minutes of riding per day). So, why do it?
